STORY: My takeaways from Texas Tech's 30-22 win over Arizona State

3-1. More thoughts tomorrow sometime.

I will say, I'm really pleased with the defense after these last couple of games. The effort has been worlds better and it's showing. I think Leavitt's stat line will be incredibly misleading to anybody who didn't watch the game and Skattebo was essentially a non-factor on the ground. Enjoy these quick takeaways.

SPITBALLIN' Final Whistle Feeling – North Texas

That was fun. A lot of questions answered and I’m personally excited to see this on film, but let’s jump into some immediate thoughts.

-Morton played a pretty dang good first half. About all you can ask for. Was 15-19 with two drops and four touchdowns. I thought he handled pressure better than he did in Pullman and the ball to Eakin might’ve been his best in his career. Excited to see it on tape.

-The offensive architecture was really exciting. Tech was diverse in the run game, did some fun things off of it, and really excelled when pushing the ball downfield. Tech was better in pass pro, and it comes back to Morton handling it better than he did last week.

-Brooks was great. Exactly what you want from him. Looked as fresh as he has been and was really able to make an impact on the game early.

-I thought your receiving corps overall was better than it has been, and that’s really saying something. Douglas had a couple of drops, but I’m very much still a believer. Kelly was himself and Eakin had his best game of the year. Want to shoutout Jordan Brown as well; he looked dang good but it’s kind of in that Hudson convo for me, how can he get on the field consistently?

-Love how Tech utilized the tight ends. Tharp had a shot at a TD while Conyers and Miller got one. Each did some good things in the blocking game as well. Personally, still want more Conyers.

-The defense played a much better game. Turnovers are key there, thanks captain. Got a little lucky with the tips and such, but it all amounts to what it became.

-Tech’s pass rush was better, still not game wrecking, but are we expecting it to be with the current injury state? Don’t know, but it was better today. I thought Isaac Smith had some nice pressures, despite the penalty. Your DTs played well too, especially Dooda and Carroll. Excited to see the PFF charting on that.

-The secondary had some issues still. Ups and downs I think. Jalon Peoples continues to struggle from a busts perspective while the fit on the screen that went for 75 yards was extremely frustrating. Young group but could be worse.

-Finally, linebackers, much, much better game. I personally thought this group was the worst on the defense through two games, and they bounced back really well. Better fits in the run game, more disciplined against RPO/PA. Love it.

-Impressed with Hammond, Williams, Dickey and Hudson. Freshman class is gonna be fun. Particularly impressed with Hammond’s polish, more Monday on that.

-Overall, excellent day. Absolutely love it. Let’s carry a similar offensive identity into next week and play as good, if not better, defense next week. Impressed, but do it again.

UPDATE: 2025 Fall Baseball Roster

Is posted on the Texas Tech website.

I count 45 and see a few names that I don’t recognize. Will dig into it more tomorrow morning.

Most notably, not seeing Carson Priebe and Hudson Luce, who I don’t believe entered the portal.

Also, Will Magids is back.

Iowa State Game in Ames

Because I have an illness that is being a Tech football fan, my wife and I are planning to go up to Ames with another couple to go to the game this year. Anyone have any recommendations for where to stay, restaurants, things to do, etc.?

We are tentatively planning to stay in Des Moines and drive up for the game since it is only 40 minutes away and looking to stay in an Airbnb in the downtown area. Looks like they have a few cool restaurants but wanted to see if anyone has any good recs on any other areas to stay, hotels/Airbnbs, specific restaurants, and anything else that is a 'can't miss' in Des Moines.

KeSean Carter (very bad)

Former Conroe ISD football standout and district paraprofessional KeSean Carter was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault of a child.
Carter, 24 of Willis, was being held in Montgomery County Jail on no bond.
According to an email from Oak Ridge High School Principal Shawn Almond to parents, Carter worked as a substitute teacher from January through May and as a paraprofessional from Aug. 21 to Sept. 16, when he was suspended while the Conroe Police Department investigated allegations against him.

Carter was fired Wednesday.

"Protection of our students is one of our highest priorities," Conroe ISD Board President Skeeter Hubert said. "There is zero tolerance and no sympathy for behavior of this kind. CISD PD initiated and led the investigation, and we will support a full prosecution. Our deepest condolences go out to any victims."
Hubert called the allegations "devastating" but said he was thankful the Conroe ISD Police Department moved quickly with the investigation.

Ligon said his office would continue to investigate the allegations.
"Our office will provide the enhanced investigative abilities that we have through the ICAC multi-agency approach to a successful prosecution of this case," Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon said. "The (Internet Crimes Against Children) prosecutors and investigators are eager to present this case to a jury here in Montgomery County."
Details of the allegations were not available.
“The alleged actions of this individual do not reflect the professionalism and care exhibited by War Eagle staff who strive to provide our students with a quality education,” Almond stated.
"Our community continues to send a very consistent message that they want the resources they provide law enforcement to be used to protect the most vulnerable and the least capable of protecting themselves, our kids," Ligon said. "CISD PD does a great job with that as is seen in this case."

According to a previous Courier article, Carter played football for Willis High School but transferred to The Woodlands before his freshman year because of differences with coaches. He had 1,565 receiving yards and 30 receiving touchdowns combined his last two seasons as an all-state performer for the Highlanders.
He twice won the Class 6A state title in the 100-meter dash, posting 10.2 seconds as a senior.
Carter graduated in 2018, committed to Texas Tech, and played three seasons for the Red Raiders, catching 83 passes for 831 yards and seven touchdowns, before transferring to Houston.
He played two seasons as a Cougar. In his senior year last season, he played all 13 games, making 10 starts, and finished second on the team in receiving yards (601), third in receptions (38), and third in receiving touchdowns (5).

Carter entered the National Football League draft in 2023 but was not selected.

Dylan Raiola Cosplaying Mahomes

Nebraska’s new freshman quarterback, seems to model his life exactly around Patrick Mahomes. Same hair, same sun glasses, same number even. It’s as if he’s cosplaying as Pat. What I’m wonder is if he’s truly trying to copy Pat can we get him to transfer here? The 5 star QB is already making an impact at Nebraska. I think it stands to reason that if he wants to achieve the same level of success he needs to transfer to Tech. Sign him under the Mahomes brand.

OT: Needing some help in Amarillo

I recently moved back to Amarillo after my wife passed away. I am needing help finding someone to foster my dogs until I find a house in town. My sister and husband have been watching them, but they're moving.

I am very grateful if anyone can help or has any leads.

I've got a cocker spaniel and a mutt that is in similar size. They're 4 and 3 years old and are used to the doggy door life. Both are potty trained.

Thanks in advance!

College Gameday

I guess it will be exculsive to the SEC and Big 10 now. It would have been a good opportunity to visit OKST this week with UU in town. They're 4 for 4 with SEC games, with the one slight exception being @Michigan when UT visited. It'll be interesting to see if they visit an ACC or Big 12 school this year. I don't see it though because today would've probably been the best chance. I'm guessing next week will be UGA-Bama when OSU visits KSU.

Lubbock weather forecast - Arizona State

Update 12:42 p.m. Saturday - There is still the possibility for a lightning delay during the second half. But the better chance for storms is later tonight.

Surprisingly, the forecast guidance hasn't changed much since Thursday. The latest modeling shows a line of thunderstorms closer to Lubbock after 7 p.m. That said, we already had a couple of lightning strikes near Levelland, though that shower/storm has been struggling because it's ahead of the better lift (which generates more widespread rain/storms). Also, storms in Eastern New Mexico are a little more widespread than computers projected. If storms right now trying to form between Hobbs and Carlsbad can hold together (not a certainty), they would get to Lubbock late afternoon.

It's warm and humid, fuel for thunderstorms. It'll stay muggy through the game.

Obviously lightning is the factor for the game. But just to be aware, storms today will be capable of becoming severe, with at least 1" hail and 60mph gusts. The mid-day Storm Prediction Center update has expanded the risk area for severe storms eastward to include Lubbock, though the primed spot for severe weather is just northwest of Lubbock into NE New Mexico.

To sum up: no big change...still a low chance for a storm during the game, storms more likely later tonight. I'll update if we do see a storm popping up and heading this way.

(Well aware a bunch of words that didn't say anything definitive, your continued weather jokes apply, haha)

posted Thursday

Warm afternoon with a chance for a thunderstorm Saturday.

Kickoff temperature in the upper 80s, high around 90 during the game, partly cloudy sky. Wind gusty out of the south 15-20mph.

Right now it looks like some thunderstorms will develop in Eastern New Mexico during the afternoon, then will spread eastward. Chance for a storm at Jones Stadium is about 20% during the afternoon, going up to 40% after 7 p.m. Where storms develop in the area, some hail and strong wind will be possible.

At this point, the game looks OK. I’d be less confident if it were an evening game. I’ll update as new info comes in.
